Home South Korea Tourism

South Korea is really a wonderful country: rich history and culture, very interesting language, sea, plain, hills and mountains landscapes, natural parks, temples, delicious food and splendid people.

Reaching Hwanseongul (환선굴) is not very hard, even if it's not really close to a big city: there's a local bus from Samcheok (삼척) to Dogye (도계) and back that stops just in front of the entrance of the cave, and it's quite frequent (maybe except in the evening, where you may have some problem), or you can reach the Singi (삼척) Train Station (which is 9km from the cave) in the Line that connects Gangneung and Donghae to Andong and Daegu and than get a taxi. The entrance is 4000won (around 2.5euro), and there's nice (but not so easy) walk to reach the real entrance of the cave. Hwanseon Cave area is very rich of caves (Gosu Cave, Gossi Cave, Chodang Cave, Gwaneum Cave and so on) and is accumulated sedimentary rock in the middle Cambrian period of the Paleozoic Era (approximately 530 million years ago) and all limestone caves in this area were created at that time.

The second part of our trip was Gyeongpo beach (경포) near Gangneung (강릉), the biggest city in the North-East of South Korea. This beach is one of the most famous in the East coast, and during the summer it's very crowded: it was not very hot, but fortunately not so cold, so daredevils decided to swim a bit. After a windy football match in the sand, I and Pedro separeted from the others and we started our real trip into South Korea: be ready for the report!

Thursday morning some of us joined Kim Sung Ryong and Hong Seul Ki in a tour in the East Coast of South Korea: our first stop was at the Odaesan National Park (오대산국립공원). This park is one of the most beautiful of the country and you should absolutely take a look around it for temples, valleys, rivers and forests. A very important place to visit is the Woljeongsa Temple (월정사). It's a very nice compound of temples: the main temple is Jeokgwangjeon (적광전) with a 9-stone story pagoda just in front of it. For lunch we ate for free in a temple, Sajaam Buddhist Hermitage on Jungdae Peak, on the way to another small temple up on a hill and very isolated, but really nice, in the same direction of Sangwonsa Temple.

The last week I traveled around Korea with Pedro: everything went good, we had a lot of fun and we saw many beautiful places. In the next weeks I'll publish more details about the trip day by day with pictures, details and more useful information.
While I'm trying to find some time to arrange everything, here is the preview of the route.
